Flight Nurse


A unique and exciting opportunity exists with New Zealand Air Ambulance Service in Auckland. NZAAS is seeking applications from suitably skilled and qualified nurses for the role of full time Flight Nurse. NZAAS flight nurses work as part of an integrated aeromedical crew across a variety of transport platforms both within New Zealand and worldwide.

Skyline Aviation and New Zealand Air Ambulance Service is one of the most experienced and well-resourced independent air ambulance operators in New Zealand. 

Key Responsibilities:

NZAAS Flight Nurses are responsible for the nursing and clinical management of patients being transported by Fixed Wing, Ground Ambulance and Rotary Wing modes of transport. Responsibilities include clinical assessment, planning patient care, clinical care of patients from acceptance of care at the referral point to relinquishment of care at receiving unit.
NZAAS flight nurses work autonomously and as part of a larger retrieval team for complex critical care patients. The aircraft becomes an extension of an emergency department, intensive care or any other specialty unit. Flight nurses are required to travel domestically and internationally.

Flight nurses are responsible for checking and maintaining medical equipment to ensure that all equipment devices are mission ready always.

To be considered for this role it is essential that you meet the following criteria:

  • A current practicing certificate with the Nursing Council of New Zealand, with evidence of meeting continuing competence requirements
  • Minimum five years post graduate experience as a registered nurse to include a minimum of 2 years in a critical care setting
  • Current ALS/PALS certification – Core Advanced
  • Professional Portfolio Level 3
  • Proficiency assisting with intubation and managing ventilated patients including invasive monitoring and inotropes/sedation
  • Proficiency inserting intravenous lines, gastric tubes and indwelling urinary catheters, intraosseous needles and LMAs.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills and the ability to communicate effectively with a range of internal and external stake holders
  • Ability to spend considerable time working and / or traveling in the confined spaces of a small aircraft
  • Current NZ Drivers License
  • Current Passport
  • Flight nurses are required to maintain a reasonable level of physical fitness
    Desirable Criteria:
  • Previous experience working as a flight nurse
  • Post graduate qualifications in Critical Care
  • Post Graduate qualification in Aeromedical Retrieval or Patient transport.

We operate and maintain a fleet of 11 aircraft, King Air B350, B200’s, C90, Nextant 400 XT, C680 Sovereign and C510 Mustang’s from bases in Napier, Auckland, Dunedin, Queenstown and Taranaki.

A vacancy has become available within our NZCAA Part 145 Engineering Department, Skyline Aero Maintenance, for a suitably qualified Licensed Aircraft Engineer.

This is a full-time position based at our Napier facility, reporting to our Director of Maintenance

Requirements / Qualifications

  • Hold current NZCAA or CASA LAME qualifications
  • Preferably have experience with King Air /Beech airframes.
  • Preferably hold Group 3 PT6A rating
  • Perform to the highest standard in a hard-working professional team environment, supporting our safety-first culture.
  • Currently hold NZ residency and the right to work in NZ noting applications from relevant Australian residents will be considered
